I prefer Jan Akkerman on this, performing a song that's normally 06.43 in just 4 minutes

Effortlessly brilliant - he was a staggering good guitarist. Miles Davis said Prince was the best pianist he had ever played with too.

Blimey, talk about triggering my pet subject (39 years behind a set of Ernie Ball Super Slinkys and counting).

OK, I'll bite.

Suffice to say he does a decent job of some pentatonic noodling, but many. many people playing regularly can play this kinda stuff with ease. Slash is another guitar player who inhabits this territory.

It's kind of like lead guitarist auto-pilot when you can't really think of where to go with a solo so you widdle away in the right key and pull out a few high notes (usually whilst grimacing with the effort), to impress the punters.

Oh and before anyone chips in with this one, yes he has sold an awful lot more records than I have.

Don't know if it's true but they say he never rehearsed it?

Re: It's old but probably the best guitar performance EVER?
You don't need to rehearse that kind of thing. Once you know the key you just noodle away. Like I said it's kind of like lead guitar auto-pilot.

If you like good guitarists try getting hold of Robin Trower live, some outstanding work on show.

Black Napkins, Bungo?

He didn't really ad lib, it sounded just the same as Clapton or Harrison did....with a few embellishments

Prince loved jamming. I heard the studio manager from Paisley Park on the the radio saying that there are thousands of hours of unreleased recordings.
Prince used to invite musicians he liked to come and stay for a while, put together an impromptu band and play for fun.

Here's an example of some really impressive playing.

Very melodic, but highly structured too. Mr John Petrucci with Liquid Tension Experiment. He knows exactly what he's doing/about to do all the way through this herculean track.

If you are part of the GAMMON ARMY then yep.

If you've listened to any radio station other than Radio Caroline in the past 80 years then no. No it's not.

I think the guitar toss was a bit disrespectful but he's Prince, he can do what he likes, when you're that fucking good

I'm always surprised that out of the many guitarists that trashed guitars as part of their act, many had techs who would retrieve the pieces and glue them back together again for another night.

You'd think in big league rock and roll that would be a minor expense?
